Why we do it

Story Juice is a creative studio that emerged from investigating how stories are impacted by digital and interactive form and those questions remain a fascination that motivates and inspires us.
We know how interactive and immersive narratives borrow and adapt more traditional storytelling forms and where they've invented fresh methods, and we use this to make games, immersive experiences, interactive art and theatre that moves, captivates and empowers audiences.
Everything starts with asking why and how we're putting the audience at the heart of a storyworld, what the actions they can take mean for the emotional narrative of the experience and how this can inspire change and understanding in the world.
We’ve made playful experiences for everyone from individuals to audiences of 200,000, for clients and partners including Almeida Theatre, Natural History Museum, Eden Project and the Roald Dahl Estate.
These have ranged from high-profile and 5-star reviewed immersive experiences using cutting edge augmented reality and sensor technology, to video games that have featured on BBC Woman's Hour, multilocational adventure games using cities as stages and interactive theatre commissions at internationally-renowned performing arts venues.
Projects have tackled themes including untold stories, intimacy, feminism, climate change and future technology across a range of genres, exploring how these topics translate into environmental storytelling, poetic mechanics, non-linear narrative structures and more.
We form diverse project teams because we recognise the power they have to create original, accessible and relevant experiences, and our work always interrogates representation and pushes the boundaries of story form and process.
The most important part our our process is iteration, which is where we playtest the work with audiences to see how they interact with it and what they feel. We design for different types of players but there are often factors and behaviours that can’t be predicted, and ways to make the interactive and immersive experience better always emerge in this process.

How we do it

We have four central ways of working with Intellectual Property* and are happy to discuss new forms of collaboration.
  • Licensing IP: We can licence our existing and self-initiated IP, or create projects in collaboration with partners who have rights to the work for an agreed time and fee.

  • Co-owned IP: We collaborate on co-owned projects with partners where each has an equal share of benefit and risk. This works well in projects where partners bring distinct skills.

  • Commissions with royalties: We take commissions from partners who have the ability to commercialise new IP or help it reach new markets. We seek to retain copyright and earn a share of revenue through royalties.

  • Consultancy: If you bring us in as a consultant on your project, we can negotiate an IP buyout fee for our services.

* “IP refers to creations of the mind, such as inventions; literary and artistic works; designs; and symbols, names and images used in commerce.

IP is protected in law by, for example, copyrights, trademarks and patents, which enable people to earn recognition or financial benefit from what they invent or create. By striking the right balance between the interests of innovators and the wider public interest, the IP system aims to foster an environment in which creativity and innovation can flourish.”
